Hornblower Port Captain appointed as Chairperson for the San Diego Harbor Safety Committee

Captain Richard Goben will continue to ensure the safety of the San Diego Bay


San Diego, California – May 28, 2008 – Captain Richard Goben, Port Captain for Hornblower Cruises & Events of San Diego, was appointed to a three year term as the Chairperson for the San Diego Harbor Safety Committee by the State of California Office of Spill Prevention and Response.  Captain Goben has served on the Committee since 1998, representing the excursion vessels operating on the Bay.

Captain Goben will replace Captain Debra Marks as Chair.  Captain Marks has been appointed as Chair for the Federal Navigation Safety Advisory Council for 2008.

“I am grateful that Rich will take over the helm as Chair of the SDHSC.  He is long recognized as an outstanding leader and brings a wealth of local maritime experience, as well as the respect of the entire maritime community to the table”, said Captain Marks.

The San Diego Harbor Safety Committee consists of approximately 20 members in San Diego, including representatives from a variety of nautical sectors: commercial shipping, pilots, port district, environmentalists and recreational boaters. There are five Harbor Safety committees in the State.  Their goal is to prevent navigation incidents and accidents and to prevent oil spill

Goben has been the Port Captain of Hornblower Cruises & Events San Diego for the past 20 years. Hornblower Cruises & Events operates daily narrated harbor tours, nightly dinner cruises and the whale watching adventures in San Diego bay. Goben is responsible for the operation and safe navigation of Hornblower’s fleet of seven yachts, and a staff of 25 crew.  The crew are in direct contact with virtually every one of the over a quarter of a million San Diego visitors each year that go aboard Hornblower’s yachts.

Captain Goben leads Hornblower’s Safecruise Committee in San Diego, ensuring that Hornblower crews provide exceptional safety and guest service. This committee is responsible for coordinating safety and security drills with the Coast Guard and other agencies.

Not only has Goben committed to cruise safety, he is also a volunteer instructor for both CPR and First Aid for the National Red Cross.  He volunteers his time to the San Diego Maritime Museum as Captain of the Steam Yacht Medea and Captain on the Star of India. Goben believes strongly in the preservation of maritime heritage and is a frequently a speaker and instructor of locals and visitors about San Diego’s rich nautical history.

Captain Goben is a leader in the local maritime and hospitality industry on many levels. He currently serves on the Executive Steering Committee of the Area Maritime Security Committee for the U.S. Coast Guard.  Goben is on the Safety and Security Committee of the Passenger Vessel Association (PVA) and he was awarded the First Annual Roger Murphy Safety Award by the PVA in 2003.

Goben volunteers his time and proficient narration skills to the crew and families of San Diego Navy ships. Goben developed a program to give narrated bay tours for family members on the ships and he has volunteered to do over 55 of these “Family Day Cruises”. Goben has been invited aboard returning West-Pacific ships and aircraft carriers to welcome the returning sailors back home with a narrated bay tour. He has had the honor of speaking on the USS Ranger, the USS Kitty Hawk, the USS Constellation, the USS John C. Stennis and the USS Nimitz.
