Hornblower’s updated harbor tours highlight prominent landmarks and eco-friendly practices

June 16, 2009

New format features the green initiatives that are keeping San Diego Bay blue

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – This June, after 25 years of spotlighting the San Diego Bay’s most spectacular landmarks, Hornblower Cruises & Events will update its classic sightseeing tour to feature local environmental efforts as well as top attractions and natural wonders. The development is part of Hornblower’s company-wide Respect Our Planet program, a series of initiatives designed to reduce the company’s environmental impact and educate the public.

While tour routes will not change, all seven daily summer cruises aboard the Adventure Hornblower will incorporate new narrated information, video clips and on-board displays highlighting the company’s eco-outreach. In addition, guests will learn about other local businesses making environmental stewardship a priority.

“Hornblower has been showcasing the San Diego Bay for more than two decades, and it’s our responsibility to educate as well as entertain,” says Jim Unger, vice president of Hornblower Cruises & Events. “By ensuring that our practices are environmentally sound and then sharing those values with our guests, we encourage people to make earth-friendly choices in their own lives.”

With the San Diego skyline and captivating marine life as a backdrop, guests will learn about local habitat restoration efforts, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified building projects and clean energy ventures, plus Hornblower’s participation in an EPA-funded, Port of San Diego study of copper-free paints that aims to minimize boating impact in the bay. As part of its Respect Our Planet efforts, the company is also dishing up more sustainable food & beverage on its tours and private charters, choosing recyclable and biodegradable service items, and bio-fuels whenever possible.

Hornblower has partnered with several local organizations on the tour update project, including the Port of San Diego, San Diego Oceans Foundation and San Diego Natural History Museum.
